(Bridgeport, CT) – Junior Achievement of Greater Fairfield County received a $100,000 grant from The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, Inc. to support the implementation of its financial literacy, career preparedness and entrepreneurial programs for youth throughout Fairfield County.
An example of the impact that an investment of this magnitude has on area kids is the JA Company Program at Bunnell High School, during which students developed a business plan and brought it to fruition, with the guidance of a JA business volunteer. With students hired for positions in finance, marketing, supply chain, and management, “Seasonal Sweets” was born. Marketing to friends, family, and Bunnell High School staff, Seasonal Sweets sold festive holiday treat baskets containing a variety of candies and cookies, as well as coco mix, a fun holiday themed mug, and a stuffed toy. Their product was a hit; they sold out within five business days! The participating students presented Seasonal Sweets’ Annual Report to parents, business/community partners, and school administrators, and shared their reflections on their experience as well. “Every student in the class learned many things, we’ve acquired new skills like how to run our business and how to have our business work efficiently,” said Jamie, Alyssa, and Ashlie, all members of the Seasonal Sweets management team.
